There’s no getting away from it. There’s only one topic of conversation on everyone’s lips. And it isn’t the imminent rise in VAT. It’s Sunday’s World Cup match between England and Germany. Whatever your memories are, 1966, 1970 or even 1990 it’s a pressure tie like no other.

And which one of us would bet against it going to penalties! Interestingly Fabio Capello has already named his team of penalty takers. A smart move given our history but I guess it deflects responsibility from the individual to the team.

And it’s the work of teams we’re particularly interested in this week at WebsEdge. It’s voting time for our Council Worker of the Year Awards and one of the categories, the one we sponsor ourselves, is Team of the Year.

As always all four of the teams deserve our recognition and praise. Two of the finalists – Cumbria  and Little Ted’s nursery in Plymouth are teams dealing with extraordinary events. And the courage shown by the team members was truly humbling. While others such as Birmingham’s gas team and Oldham’s Bloom and Grow members are providing excellent services all year round.

But one thing unites all these team players. Their desire to work closely with their colleagues to serve their communities – each and every day.  And it’s that commitment that makes these teams in particular deserving of both our thanks and praise.
